story

About 10 miles north of Austin, there is a set of REAL dino tracks. They are on the bank of the San Gabriel River in Leander. They are not featured on any map or guide, but neighbors and boyscout troops have been enjoying them for millions of years...okay, probably just for the past 6 or 7 decades.
According to the paleotologist who wrote about it in 1996, the dinosaur is a Gigantasaurus...looks just like a T-Rex. It was about 27 feet long and stood about 13 feet high. It lived during the same era as the dino tracks in the Dinosaur Valley Park, TX.
We live only 15 minutes from the river so we go when we have 2-3 hours available. . . sometimes we go for half a day with water, snacks, lunch, swim suits, nets, etc. The kids love to catch critters (crawfish, minnows, frogs). There is a good swimming hole about 150 yards up the river, too.

Directions: North on 183 toward Leander about 11 miles north of Oak Knoll exit. After the railroad tracks, turn left onto Signall Hill Drive. (If you pass over San Gabriel River you've gone too far). Drive straight until it dead ends into Skyview Terrace. Turn right and park in the empty, undeveloped cul-de-sac. The "NO TRESPASSING" signs refer to the area behind the fence...don't go there...walk along the fence to the left until you see a path...take it unti you see a steep path down to the river (it will be on your left). It has big railroad ties boardering the path all the way down. Once you get to the bottom, you should be able to see the tracks on the river's edge to the right a little -- about 10-20 yards.

Every time we have visited (at least a dozen in the past 5 years) we see just 1 or 2 other families walking around doing the same thing. It's very cool to think a dinosaur walked along this river.
You won't find this in any tour guide book or on any map -- so I had to add a cafe to this write-up to give driving directions to a place nearby (the O'Leander Cafe).
